When we introduced Masunaga MOC on the Journal last month, we called it the furthest reach of Sabae craftsmanship. That was true. It is also about to go further.
In November, Masunaga releases, together with 100 more stores around the world, the next chapter of its Masters of Craft collection: three entirely new models — MOC 007, MOC 008 and MOC 009 and two new colourways of MOC 003, the round frame that started it all. Some of it we can show you now. Some of it Masunaga is still keeping to itself.
Want to be first in line? MOC is available on request only. Email us at hello@sunofjapan.com to register your interest before launch.
MOC 003, in two new colourways
MOC 003 is Masunaga’s iconic round shape, rebuilt to MOC specification: a 10mm acetate inner rim set inside a titanium front, 5-micron gold-plated parts, mineral glass lenses and the sterling silver 925 MOC medallion on the temple tip. In a collection defined by bold statements, it is the frame that most clearly shows where MOC comes from, a round silhouette Masunaga has refined for decades, given the full Masters of Craft treatment.
Until now, MOC 003 has been produced in three colourways: Rose Gold with Burgundy, Matte Black with Grey Crystal, and Matte Dark Blue. November adds two more:
Sizing stays the same: 49mm lens, 22mm bridge, 145mm temples.
MOC 007, 008 and 009: still under wraps
Three new numbers are joining the collection, and Masunaga is keeping them close. Shapes, colourways and sizes for MOC 007, 008 and 009 have not been revealed yet, not to the public.
What we do know is what makes a frame MOC in the first place. Every model in the collection so far has been built to the same uncompromising specification: hand-polished 5-micron 18-karat gold plating, sterling silver 925 detailing, a solid sterling silver medallion on the temple tip, mineral glass lenses and double-layer shield nose pads. Each has also been produced in a single batch of 150 pieces worldwide. There is every reason to expect 007, 008 and 009 to hold that line and, judging by how 004, 005 and 006 pushed further than 001 to 003, to go somewhere new with it.
We will update this page the moment Masunaga releases the details. If you want to hear first, email us now and we will send you the full reveal, with images, as soon as we have it.
Why it pays to ask early
Every MOC model is made in a single batch of 150 pieces worldwide and offered through around 100 retailers globally. Do the maths and it comes to one or two frames per store, per model. Once a batch is gone, it is gone, the specifications are too demanding to simply run another one.
That is why MOC is not sold through our online shop. Instead, we take requests by email and allocate frames in the order we receive them. If one of these models speaks to you, the best thing you can do is tell us now.
If you are new to MOC and want to understand what goes into each frame, the sterling silver decoration, the 5-micron gold plating that cannot be corrected once applied, the custom Three Wide rim wire, our full introduction to Masunaga MOC covers it in detail. And for the broader picture of how Japanese frames are built by hand in Sabae, start with how Japanese eyewear frames are made by hand.
How to request a MOC frame
- Email hello@sunofjapan.com with the MOC 003 colourway you are interested in, or simply ask to be notified when 007, 008 and 009 are revealed.
- We will confirm availability, pricing and timing as soon as the November allocation is confirmed.
- As with everything we ship, taxes and duties are prepaid globally.
